Congratulations!

You've Just Unlocked One of Bengal's Best-Kept Secrets.

What you are holding is not just a handcrafted wooden owl. It is the ambassador of a 300-year-old living tradition, a messenger from Bengal, and a small piece of Indian heritage that has travelled miles to reach your hands.

Every brushstroke painted by hand. Every carving reflects the artisan’s skill.

A Living Tradition from Natungram

This owl was lovingly handcrafted by Sujay Sutradhar (M36), a master artisan from Natungram, a historic village in West Bengal where generations of woodcarvers have kept this remarkable craft alive for more than three centuries.

Today, this extraordinary tradition has earned international recognition through the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) Tag, acknowledging the Natungram Wooden Owl as an authentic cultural treasure of India.

In Bengal, the owl is far more than a bird. As the vahana (divine mount) of Goddess Lakshmi, it represents prosperity, wisdom, vigilance and thoughtful living. For generations, these owls have watched over Bengali homes as symbols of good fortune.

Mountains to Mangroves

When Impression Tourism Services (India) Pvt. Ltd. (ITS) began its pioneering destination branding campaign, “Mountains to Mangroves – A Journey of 1000 Kilometres,” in 2009, we searched for a symbol that could genuinely represent the soul of Bengal. We found it in this humble wooden owl.

Since then, this little owl has quietly become one of the world’s most travelled ambassadors of Bengal. Nearly 10,000 handcrafted owls have journeyed across the globe as gifts to travel professionals, tourism leaders, diplomats, journalists, travellers and friends across India and the world.

Each one carries not only the signature of its artisan, but also the story of a village, a tradition and a culture that deserves to be celebrated. This unique initiative became an integral part of our destination branding efforts, contributing to the National Tourism Award conferred upon ITS by the Government of India in 2022.

No two owls are ever exactly alike.

Every brushstroke is painted by hand. Every carving reflects the artisan’s skill. Every piece helps sustain a family whose heritage has been shaped by generations of craftsmanship.

So, while this owl may fit comfortably in the palm of your hand, it carries something far greater—the spirit of Bengal and Northeast India

Thank You for Taking This Journey With Us

May this little owl always remind you that the most unforgettable journeys begin not with monuments, but with the people who keep traditions alive.
